Septum piercing in Pondicherry

A septum piercing is striking, versatile and surprisingly discreet: flip the jewellery up and it disappears. The key is precision. Found in the right spot and perfectly centred, a septum looks effortless. Here's how we do it.

The septum is one of the oldest and most widespread piercings in human history, worn across many cultures for centuries. Today it's popular for one very modern reason: versatility. A slim ring looks bold and graphic. A circular barbell gives a subtler horseshoe. Flip either up inside the nostrils and, to most people, it simply isn't there. Handy for job interviews, family functions and the occasional disapproving relative.

The "sweet spot", explained

Your septum isn't solid cartilage all the way down. Between the firm cartilage higher up and the fleshy tip of the nose, most people have a thin, soft band of tissue. Piercers call it the "sweet spot". A well-placed septum goes through this soft area, not through the cartilage above it.

Piercing the sweet spot:

  • Hurts less than going through cartilage.
  • Heals faster and more reliably.
  • Hangs better, so the jewellery sits neatly at the base of the nose.
  • Flips up more easily, if you want to hide it.

Most people have a sweet spot, but its size and position vary. Some noses also have a slightly deviated septum, which affects placement. That's why the first step is a careful look.

Centred and straight: why precision matters

A septum piercing sits in the middle of your face, so even a slight tilt is noticeable. Good technique means:

  • Checking alignment from the front, below and in profile before piercing.
  • Accounting for asymmetry. Most noses aren't perfectly symmetrical, so the piercing is placed to look centred on your face, not just on a ruler.
  • Going through the sweet spot at the right angle, so the jewellery hangs evenly.

At your free consultation, Mukhilan examines your nose, finds your sweet spot and talks you through what to expect. It's a quick, painless check. A gentle pinch of the tissue between finger and thumb usually tells us everything we need to know. If your sweet spot is very small or sits unusually high, we'll explain what that means for placement, comfort and jewellery before you decide anything.

Is a septum right for you right now?

  • You've had your sweet spot checked and it's suitable
  • You're comfortable with a few days of tenderness in the middle of your face
  • You can avoid swimming for the first weeks
  • You're happy to leave the initial jewellery in until it's healed
  • You know whether you'll need to flip it up for work or family
  • You don't have a heavy cold or sinus infection right now

What happens during a septum piercing

  1. Free consultation: sweet spot check, alignment and jewellery choice.
  2. Clean and mark: the area is cleaned and the placement checked from several angles.
  3. Set-up: autoclave-sterilised tools and a fresh single-use needle, opened in front of you.
  4. Piercing: a quick, intense pinch. Your eyes will water and you may feel like sneezing. It's over in a second.
  5. Jewellery and aftercare: jewellery goes in, we check that it hangs straight, and you get written aftercare.

For a fresh piercing, body-safe metals such as implant-grade titanium or solid gold are widely recommended. Avoid plated metals or unknown alloys while healing.

Flipping it up

The ability to hide a septum is one of its best features, but go gently during healing. Flipping a fresh piercing up and down repeatedly irritates it. If you need it hidden while healing, flip it up and leave it there, rather than moving it back and forth through the day. Once healed, flip as often as you like.

How a septum heals

A typical septum healing timeline
StageWhat's normalYour job
Days 1–7Tenderness, swelling, a "bruised" feeling, watery eyes if bumpedSaline once or twice daily, avoid knocks, don't flip it constantly
Weeks 2–4Crusting inside the nose, mild tendernessGentle saline cleaning, careful nose-blowing

Everyone heals differently, and some septums take longer. Give it the time it needs.

Septum aftercare in Pondicherry

Daily care

  • Spray sterile saline wound wash on both sides of the piercing once or twice a day. Soften any crust, then gently pat dry.
  • Don't twist or spin the jewellery.
  • Clean hands only, and only when cleaning.
  • Skip alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, oils, home remedies and nasal products near the piercing.

Colds, dust and sneezing

  • Blow your nose gently, one nostril at a time, and clean the piercing afterwards.
  • Dust from scooter rides settles in and around the nose. A gentle saline rinse when you get home helps.
  • Sneezing may make it sting for a moment early on. That's normal.

Make-up, sunscreen and skincare

Keep foundation, powder and sunscreen away from the nostril edges while healing. You'll still want sunscreen on your face in Pondicherry, so just apply it carefully around the area.

Swimming and humidity

Avoid the sea, pools and tubs for the first weeks at least. The waves at Promenade or Serenity Beach aren't sterile. Pondicherry's humidity also means sweat around the nose, so rinse gently after hot, active days.

If you notice spreading redness, heat, increasing pain, thick discoloured discharge or fever, see a doctor promptly and let us know.

Signs your septum is healing well

Healthy healing usually means the tenderness fades over the first couple of weeks, crusting becomes lighter, and you stop noticing the jewellery when you smile or eat. Bumping it will still make your eyes water for a while. That's simply where it is. If pain increases rather than eases, or swelling spreads, get it checked.

Healing while you travel

Septum piercings travel well. Pack a small saline spray and clean paper towels. On flights, cabin air is dry, so you might notice more crusting. Gentle saline helps. Be careful pulling masks and scarves on and off, and keep the jewellery flipped in the same position rather than moving it about.

Styling a healed septum

Once healed, a septum is one of the most fun piercings to style.

  • Slim seamless ring: clean, minimal and modern.
  • Clicker with a decorative front: from simple beaded edges to ornate designs that echo the filigree on traditional South Indian jewellery.
  • Circular barbell with small beads: subtle, and the easiest to flip up.
  • Retainer: practically invisible, for the moments that call for discretion.

Size matters for comfort and look. Too small, and the ring presses on your nostrils. Too large, and it hangs over your lip. Bring any jewellery you're considering and we'll check the fit.

Living with a septum

Healed septums are low-maintenance. Clean during your normal face-washing routine, rinse after swimming, and keep spare jewellery in a small pouch when you travel. If you flip it up often, give it a gentle clean now and then, since skin oils can build up inside the nostrils. And if you ever need to remove it for a medical procedure, ask about a non-metal retainer to keep the hole open.

Common septum mistakes

  1. Piercing through cartilage instead of the sweet spot. Choose an experienced piercer who looks first.
  2. Flipping it up and down constantly while healing.
  3. Changing jewellery too early, especially to heavy decorative pieces.
  4. Ignoring a crooked piercing. If it hangs off-centre after swelling settles, ask us. Sometimes a jewellery change fixes it.
  5. Swimming in week one. The sea will still be there in a month.
  6. Pulling on it to check it's "still there". It is. Leave it alone and let it heal.

If your septum feels heavy, sore or sits awkwardly at any point, even months later, check the jewellery first. Many niggles come down to size or weight rather than the piercing itself, and a simple swap often fixes them.

01 /

Does a septum piercing hurt?

It's a quick, intense pinch that makes most people's eyes water and some people sneeze. Through the sweet spot, it's usually more manageable than people expect.

02 /

What is the septum 'sweet spot'?

It's the thin, soft band of tissue between the cartilage and the tip of your nose. Piercing there hurts less, heals better and hangs neatly.

03 /

Can I hide my septum piercing?

Yes. With suitable jewellery like a circular barbell, it can be flipped up inside the nostrils. While healing, flip it once and leave it rather than moving it often.

04 /

How long does a septum take to heal?

Typically around two to three months, though some take longer. Leave the initial jewellery in until it's fully healed.

05 /

What if I have a deviated septum?

Many people with a slightly deviated septum can still get one. We'll check your anatomy and place it so it looks centred on your face.

06 /

Why does my septum piercing smell?

Natural skin oils and dead cells can build up and cause a mild odour. Gentle saline cleaning usually handles it. If there's pain or discoloured discharge, see a doctor.

07 /

Can I get a septum if I have a cold?

It's best to wait until you're well. Constant nose-blowing and congestion make healing harder.

08 /

When can I change to a clicker or ring?

Once it's fully healed, usually after a couple of months or more. Ask us to check before you switch.

09 /

Will a septum piercing change how I breathe or smell?

No. A sweet-spot septum piercing sits in the soft tissue at the base of the nose and doesn't affect breathing or sense of smell.

10 /

Can I walk in for a septum piercing?

Yes. Walk-ins are welcome during opening hours, and the sweet-spot check is free.
