Nose piercings have a long history in South India. The mookuthi has been worn for generations, and many families have their own customs about side and style. Today, nose piercings are just as popular with travellers and first-timers who simply love the look. Whatever brings you to it, the essentials are the same: a placement that suits your face, clean technique, sensible jewellery and patient healing.
Types of nose piercing
| Piercing | Where | Typical healing | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nostril | The curve of the nostril | Around 4–6 months | The classic. Suits studs and, once healed, hoops |
| High nostril | Higher up, near the bridge | Around 6 months or more | Striking, but needs the right anatomy and a flat-backed stud |
| Double nostril | Two piercings on one side | Around 4–6 months each | Plan spacing carefully |
| Septum | The soft "sweet spot" between nostrils | Around 2–3 months | Can be flipped up to hide |
| Bridge | Across the top of the nose, between the eyes | Several months | Surface-style piercing, anatomy-dependent |
Healing times are typical ranges. Everyone heals at their own pace.
Finding the right placement for your face
A few millimetres change everything with a nose piercing. A good placement:
- Follows the natural crease of the nostril, or sits slightly above it, depending on the look you want.
- Suits your face shape and nose size. Smaller noses often suit placements slightly further forward. Longer noses can carry a placement further back.
- Works with your jewellery plans. If you want a hoop later, the piercing needs to sit where a hoop will hug the nostril neatly.
- Respects tradition if you're following a family custom about side or position.
At your consultation, Mukhilan marks the spot and you look in the mirror, from the front, in profile and smiling. We adjust until it feels right. Bring a photo of a nose piercing you like as a reference.
Which side?
Many South Indian families traditionally favour a particular side for the mookuthi, and some people pierce both. Otherwise, it's purely personal. Some people pick the side they consider their "good side" in photos. Others pick the side they don't usually sleep on, which genuinely helps healing. There's no wrong answer.
If you already have piercings elsewhere on your face, like an eyebrow or lip piercing, balance matters too. Some people like everything on one side for a deliberately asymmetric look. Others prefer to spread piercings across both sides. Hold a phone camera up, take a few photos with the marked dot in place, and see which feels most like you. It's surprising how quickly the right side becomes obvious once you see it on screen rather than in a mirror, which flips your face.

What to expect on the day
- Free consultation. Placement, jewellery style and any tradition you're following.
- Clean and mark. The area is cleaned, the spot marked, and you check it in a mirror.
- Set-up. Autoclave-sterilised tools and a fresh single-use needle, opened in front of you.
- Piercing. A quick, sharp pinch. Your eyes will probably water. That's a reflex, not a sign it hurts terribly.
- Jewellery and aftercare. The initial jewellery goes in, and we walk you through healing.
Jewellery for a fresh nose piercing
- Start with a stud. Studs move less than hoops, which means less irritation while healing.
- Choose body-safe metal. Implant-grade titanium and solid gold are widely recommended for fresh piercings. Avoid plated metals and unknown alloys.
- Flat-backed or securely fastened studs are more comfortable and less likely to fall out. We'll talk through options suited to your piercing.
- Wait before switching to a hoop or mookuthi. Many people are eager, but swapping too early is the most common reason nose piercings get irritated. Ask us to check it first.
Aftercare in a hot, humid town
Daily routine
- Spray with a sterile saline wound wash once or twice a day, then gently pat dry with clean paper towel.
- Keep your hands off it. Noses get touched unconsciously more than any other piercing.
- Don't twist or turn the jewellery.
- Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, tea tree oil, turmeric pastes and other home remedies. They irritate more than they help.
Make-up, sunscreen and skincare
Foundation, powder, sunscreen and face creams can clog a healing nostril. Keep products away from the piercing for the first weeks, and cleanse around it gently. Pondicherry's sun means you'll want sunscreen on your face, so apply it carefully, avoiding the piercing.
Colds, dust and sweat
- Blow your nose gently if you have a cold, and clean the piercing afterwards.
- Scooter rides kick up dust. Rinse gently with saline when you get home.
- Sweat in the humid heat is normal. A gentle saline rinse after a hot day helps.
Swimming and travel
Skip the sea, pools and hot tubs for the first weeks at least. Sea water at Serenity Beach or the Promenade isn't sterile. When travelling, pack a small saline spray and some clean paper towels in your day bag.
If you notice spreading redness, increasing pain, thick discoloured discharge, heat or fever, see a doctor promptly and let us know.
How a nose piercing heals, week by week
| Stage | What's normal | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–7 | Tenderness, slight swelling, redness, watery eyes when touched | Saline once or twice daily, hands off, no make-up near it |
| Weeks 2–6 | Light crusting, occasional itch, swelling settles | Soften crust with saline, pat dry, ask about downsizing |
| Months 2–4 | Looks calm outside; still healing inside | Keep the stud in, avoid knocks, keep products away |
| Months 4–6+ | Healed for many people | Ask us to check before switching to a hoop or traditional jewellery |
Everyone heals differently. Pondicherry's humidity, your skincare routine, sleep habits and general health all play a part. Patience really is the main ingredient.
Downsizing: the step people forget
A fresh nose piercing swells, so the initial stud post is usually a little longer to make room. Once the swelling settles, often within the first few weeks, a shorter post should be fitted. A post that's too long catches on towels, masks and dupattas, moves around more, and is a common cause of irritation bumps. Pop back into the studio, or message us, and we'll advise when it's the right time.
Nose piercings at work, home and in photos
Nose piercings are widely accepted and, in South India, deeply familiar. Still, if you need something more discreet for certain settings, a small, simple stud in a skin-friendly tone or a tiny flat disc is barely noticeable. Hoops are bolder. Septum rings can be flipped up out of sight. Think about how you'd like the piercing to fit your everyday life, and tell us at the consultation. It affects both placement and jewellery choice.
Healing while you travel
If you're flying home or moving on from Pondicherry soon after your piercing, pack a small sterile saline spray and clean paper towels. On planes and long bus rides, try not to rest your face against the window or a travel pillow on the pierced side. Remove face masks and scarves carefully so they don't snag. Hotel towels can catch jewellery too, so pat your face dry gently. And if your next stop is another beach, the no-swimming rule comes along for the trip.
The bump question
Small bumps near a nose piercing are common and usually caused by irritation: knocking it, sleeping on it, changing jewellery too early or using harsh products. Most settle down once the cause is removed. Don't pick at them or attack them with home remedies. Message us a photo and we'll help you work out what's going on.
Common nose piercing mistakes
- Swapping to a hoop too soon. Wait until it's properly healed.
- Touching it constantly. It's right in the middle of your face. We know. Try anyway.
- Covering it in make-up during the first weeks.
- Using home remedies instead of sterile saline.
- Sleeping on the pierced side, night after night.
- Taking the jewellery out "just for a day". Nostril piercings can start closing surprisingly fast.
