Look at your ear in the mirror. That broad, shallow bowl of cartilage in the middle, just outside the ear canal, is the inner conch. The flat ridge of cartilage between the rim and that bowl is the outer conch. Both make spectacular piercing spots. A conch stud catches the light like a small jewel set into the ear, and a healed conch hoop wrapping around the rim is one of the boldest looks in ear styling. Fitting for a town where the sea is never far away.
Inner conch vs. outer conch
| Inner conch | Outer conch | |
|---|---|---|
| Where | The bowl of the ear, beside the canal | The flat area between the rim and the bowl |
| Look | A jewel set into the centre of the ear | A subtler accent on the upper ear |
| Jewellery | Flat-back stud while healing; hoop possible later | Flat-back stud; hoop sometimes possible later |
| Earbuds | Can interfere during healing | Usually less affected |
| Healing | Typically 6–12 months | Typically 6–12 months |
Is your ear a good fit?
Most people have enough space for a conch, but anatomy still matters:
- Size and depth of the bowl affect inner conch placement and jewellery size.
- The curve of your rim determines whether a hoop will sit nicely later.
- Existing piercings like a helix, rook or daith influence spacing.
- How you use your ears day to day, including earbuds, phones and helmets, affects which option will be happier.
Mukhilan will look closely at your ear at the free consultation and recommend the best spot. He'll be honest if a different piercing would suit your ear better, because a piercing that fights your anatomy will never feel or look quite right.
Is a conch right for you right now?
- You can avoid sleeping on that side for several months
- You're happy to use the other ear for earbuds and phone calls for a while
- You'll start with a stud and wait before switching to a hoop
- You can be gentle with helmets every time you ride
- You're ready for six to twelve months of light, consistent care
- You don't have a big swim-heavy holiday right after your appointment

What happens during a conch piercing
- Free consultation: inner or outer, placement and jewellery.
- Clean and mark: you approve the dot in the mirror. Front, side and with your hair up and down.
- Set-up: autoclave-sterilised tools and a fresh single-use needle, opened in front of you.
- Piercing: a firm pressure and a strong, brief pinch. Cartilage piercings can make a little crunch sound. That's normal.
- Jewellery and aftercare: a stud goes in, and you get written instructions for healing in Pondicherry.
Jewellery: stud now, hoop later
- Start with a flat-back stud. It sits flush, moves less and heals far better than a hoop in fresh cartilage.
- Choose body-safe metal. Implant-grade titanium and solid gold are widely recommended for fresh piercings. Avoid plated or unknown alloys.
- Downsize when swelling settles. A shorter post, fitted after the initial swelling goes down, reduces snagging and bumps.
- Hoops after full healing. A conch hoop is a gorgeous goal. Plan it for many months down the line, and ask us to check the piercing first.
How a conch heals
| Stage | What's normal | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| First week | Tenderness, swelling, throbbing if knocked, possible clear fluid | Saline once or twice daily, sleep off it, no earbuds on that side |
| Weeks 2–8 | Crusting, swelling settling, tenderness under pressure | Gentle cleaning, ask about downsizing |
| Months 3–6 | Looks calm; still healing inside | Keep the stud in, avoid pressure and knocks |
| Months 6–12 | Healed for many people | Ask us before changing to a hoop |
Conch aftercare, Pondicherry style
Daily basics
- Spray with sterile saline wound wash once or twice a day. Let it soften any crust, then pat dry with clean paper towel.
- Don't twist or rotate the jewellery.
- Hands off, except when cleaning with clean hands.
- No alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, harsh soaps, oils or home remedies.
Earbuds and phones
The inner conch sits right beside the ear canal, so earbuds can press on it. Use the other ear, or switch to speaker mode, for the first months. Clean your phone screen regularly, since it touches your ear more than you think.
Helmets
Scooter helmets can press into the ear. Spread the sides gently as you put the helmet on and take it off, and choose one with a little room around the ears.
Sleep
Sleep on the other side, or use a travel pillow so your ear sits in the hole without pressure. Put a clean T-shirt over your pillow each night.
Humidity, sweat and the sea
Pondicherry's humidity means sweat collects inside the ear. Rinse gently with saline after a hot day. Keep shampoo, conditioner and hair oil away from the piercing, and rinse well after washing your hair. And skip swimming at Serenity, Paradise or Promenade Beach, and in pools, until the piercing is well healed. Sea water isn't sterile, despite what someone on holiday will inevitably tell you.
If you notice spreading redness, heat, increasing pain, thick discoloured discharge or fever, see a doctor promptly and let us know.
Bumps and irritation
Irritation bumps are common with cartilage, and usually caused by pressure (sleeping, earbuds, helmets), knocks, a post that's too long, or harsh products. Remove the cause and they often settle. Don't squeeze them, don't use home remedies, and don't remove the jewellery without advice. Message us a photo and we'll help you work out what's going on.
Signs your conch is healing well
Healthy healing looks like tenderness slowly fading over the weeks, a little clear or pale crust that softens easily with saline, and swelling that settles rather than grows. Over the months, the skin around the jewellery starts to look like the rest of your ear, and an accidental bump hurts less each time. Cartilage is a slow healer, so "slowly getting better" is exactly what you want.
Healing while you travel
If you're heading off after your appointment, pack a travel-size saline spray and clean paper towels. Leave the earbuds in the other ear, or skip them on the flight. A neck pillow keeps your ear off hard surfaces. Lay a clean T-shirt over hotel pillows. And keep sending us questions on WhatsApp if anything worries you.
Styling a healed conch
Once your conch has fully healed, and we've checked it, the fun begins.
- A statement stud: a larger flat-back stud, a cluster or a gemstone sitting in the bowl of the ear. It's the "jewel in the shell" look.
- A conch hoop: a larger ring wrapping around the outer rim. Bold and unmistakable, and only once fully healed.
- A minimal disc: a simple metal disc for an understated, architectural feel.
- Matching metals: pairing your conch with your lobe and helix jewellery in the same metal makes a curated ear look intentional.
Changing a conch stud for the first time can be fiddly, especially with internally threaded or push-fit jewellery. Pop into the studio and we'll help.
Your conch and the rest of your ear
The conch is the natural centrepiece of a curated ear. Lobes stack below it, a helix frames it above, and a daith or rook can sit nearby. Plan the whole ear before you start, even if you're only getting one piercing today, so each new piercing fits the bigger picture. Pace yourself, too. One cartilage piercing at a time per ear keeps healing manageable and leaves you a comfortable side to sleep on.
Common conch mistakes
- Rushing into a hoop. The most common cause of conch trouble.
- Earbuds on the pierced side, pressing on a fresh piercing.
- Sleeping on it night after night.
- Skipping the downsize once swelling settles.
- Over-cleaning with harsh products that dry and irritate the tissue.
- Judging healing by looks alone. A conch can look perfect at three months and still be tender inside.
