Eyebrow piercings had a big moment in the late nineties and early 2000s, and they're back with a more refined look: smaller jewellery, smarter angles and placements that follow the natural line of the brow. The modern eyebrow piercing is less "rebel phase" and more "subtle edge". It also needs careful technique, because it sits close to the surface and in a spot everyone sees.
Placement options
| Placement | Where | Look | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vertical | Straight up and down through the outer brow | Classic, symmetrical | Works well with a defined brow ridge |
| Angled | Tilted to follow the brow's natural line | Modern, flattering | The most popular choice today |
| Multiple | Two or more along the brow | Bold, stacked | Space carefully; heal one first if possible |
| Anti-eyebrow | Below the eye on the upper cheekbone | Very different look | Surface piercing; higher rejection risk |
Most people suit an angled placement on the outer third of the brow. It follows the brow's natural line, sits away from the eye, and avoids the nerves found nearer the centre of the face. It also tends to look the most natural in photos, because it works with the shape of your brow rather than cutting across it. If you have a very straight or very arched brow, the ideal angle shifts slightly. That's exactly the kind of detail we sort out in the mirror together before anything is pierced.
Why angle and depth matter
The eyebrow is a surface-adjacent piercing. There's skin and tissue, but no cartilage or deep structure to anchor the jewellery. That means:
- Too shallow, and the body may slowly push the jewellery out (rejection) or shift it (migration).
- Too deep, and it can be uncomfortable or sit awkwardly.
- The wrong angle, and it fights your brow's natural movement every time you frown, laugh or raise an eyebrow.
At your free consultation, Mukhilan pinches the tissue to see how much there is, watches your brow move as you make expressions, and marks a placement that suits your face. You check it in the mirror, and we adjust until it's right.
Is an eyebrow piercing right for you right now?
- You're comfortable with a visible facial piercing at work and at home
- You can keep make-up, brow products and sunscreen away from it while healing
- You'll be gentle with sunglasses, helmet visors and towels
- You're happy to come back to downsize the bar once swelling settles
- You'll keep an eye out for signs of migration over the coming months
- You don't have a brow-threading or waxing appointment booked soon

What happens during an eyebrow piercing
- Free consultation: placement, angle, jewellery and lifestyle.
- Clean and mark: entry and exit points are marked, and you check them while making a few expressions.
- Set-up: autoclave-sterilised tools and a fresh single-use needle, opened in front of you.
- Piercing: a firm pinch and a moment of pressure. Over quickly.
- Jewellery and aftercare: jewellery goes in, and you get written instructions for healing in Pondicherry's climate.
Some swelling and even mild bruising around the brow is normal in the first days. It looks dramatic but usually settles quickly.
Jewellery for a fresh eyebrow
- A curved barbell is the standard choice. It follows the brow's shape and moves less than a ring.
- Slightly longer at first to allow for swelling, then downsized once the swelling goes down. This is important. A long bar catches on everything.
- Body-safe metals such as implant-grade titanium or solid gold are widely recommended for fresh piercings. Avoid plated metals and unknown alloys.
- Rings later. Small rings can look great once fully healed, but they move more, so wait.
How an eyebrow piercing heals
| Stage | What's normal | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–5 | Swelling, tenderness, possibly mild bruising | Saline once or twice daily, cold compress for swelling, sleep on your back |
| Weeks 1–4 | Crusting, swelling settling | Gentle cleaning, downsize the bar when advised |
| Weeks 4–12 | Healed for many people | Keep products away, don't swap to a ring yet |
| Ongoing | Healed | Keep an eye on the bar's depth over time |
Eyebrow aftercare in Pondicherry
Daily care
- Spray with sterile saline wound wash once or twice a day, then pat dry gently with clean paper towel.
- Don't twist or rotate the jewellery.
- Hands off, except to clean with clean hands.
- No alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, oils or home remedies.
Make-up and brow products
Keep brow pencils, gels, powders and foundation away from the piercing while it heals. No threading, waxing or tinting near it either. Tell your salon you have a fresh piercing. Avoid getting face wash, toner or serum directly into it.
Sunglasses and helmets
Pondicherry's sun means sunglasses, and scooter rides mean helmets, often with visors. Both can catch an eyebrow bar. Put them on and take them off slowly, and choose frames that don't press on the piercing.
Sun, sweat and sunscreen
Keep thick sunscreen off the piercing itself, but do protect the surrounding skin. Rinse gently after sweaty days in the humid heat.
Sleep and towels
Sleep on your back or on the other side, especially in the first weeks. Pat your face dry gently. Towels love to snag eyebrow bars.
Swimming
Avoid the sea, pools and hot tubs while healing. The water at Serenity or the Promenade isn't sterile. Diving face-first into waves is also a good way to knock a fresh piercing.
If you notice spreading redness, heat, increasing pain, thick discoloured discharge or fever, see a doctor promptly and let us know.
Signs your eyebrow is healing well
Healthy healing usually looks like this: swelling and any bruising fade within the first week or so, crusting becomes lighter, and tenderness eases steadily. After a few weeks, the skin around the entry and exit points looks calm and similar to the rest of your brow, and the bar sits at the same depth it did on day one. Take a quick photo each week in the same light. Comparing them makes steady progress, or any change in depth, easy to spot.
Eyebrow piercings at work and in photos
An eyebrow piercing is one of the more visible piercings you can get, so it's worth thinking about everyday life. Once healed, a small, simple bar with tiny ball ends in a neutral finish is surprisingly understated. Clear or skin-tone retainers exist for the occasions that call for even more discretion, though they're for healed piercings only. If your work involves safety equipment, helmets or goggles, mention it at the consultation. It can affect placement and jewellery choice.
Migration and rejection: what to watch for
Because the eyebrow is surface-adjacent, it's worth keeping an eye on it over time. Signs of migration or rejection include:
- More of the bar becoming visible between the ends
- The skin over the bar looking thinner, shinier or reddened
- The piercing holes appearing to move closer together
- Ongoing tenderness long after healing should be finished
If you notice any of these, message us early. Catching it early makes it much easier to manage, and if it's best to remove the jewellery, doing so early minimises scarring.
Healing while you travel
Eyebrow piercings travel reasonably well. Pack a small saline spray and clean paper towels. On flights, avoid resting your head against the window on the pierced side, and be careful with eye masks and the arms of travel glasses. Remove hats and helmets slowly.
Styling a healed brow
Once fully healed, an eyebrow piercing can be styled to suit your mood: tiny ball ends for something subtle, spikes for more edge, or a small ring once we've checked it's ready. Pairing it with a nostril or lip piercing on the same side creates a deliberately asymmetric look. Spreading piercings across both sides feels more balanced.
Common eyebrow piercing mistakes
- Choosing a placement too central, near the nerves at the inner brow.
- Skipping the downsize, leaving a long bar to snag on everything.
- Brow threading or waxing too close to a healing piercing. Book the salon after it's healed, not before.
- Ignoring early signs of migration. A quick message to us costs nothing.
- Switching to a ring too soon.
