Lobes are soft, forgiving and quick to heal, which is why they're the most common piercing in the world. But "simple" doesn't mean "careless". A lobe piercing that's crooked, too close to the edge, or spaced awkwardly from its neighbours is something you'll see in the mirror every day. And a piercing done with poor hygiene can cause trouble in any tissue. So we treat lobes like everything else: careful placement, clean technique and honest aftercare.
Lobe piercing options
| Piercing | Where | Typical healing | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| First lobe | Centre of the lobe | Around 6–8 weeks | The classic starting point |
| Second lobe | Above and slightly behind the first | Around 6–8 weeks | Spacing is key for a neat stack |
| Third lobe | Above the second | Around 6–8 weeks or a little longer | Needs enough lobe space |
| Upper lobe | Where the lobe meets the cartilage | Around 2–3 months | Firmer tissue, slightly longer healing |
| Stacked lobes | Two or three done in one visit | As above | Plan the full stack before starting |
Healing times are typical ranges. Everyone heals differently, and keeping jewellery in for longer before swapping is always safer.
Placement and spacing
Good lobe piercings look effortless because they've been carefully planned.
- Centred, not too low. Piercings too close to the bottom edge of the lobe can stretch or tear more easily with heavy earrings.
- Even and symmetrical if you're getting a pair. We mark both ears and check them in the mirror, from the front and side.
- Thoughtful spacing for stacks. Enough room for the earrings you want to wear, whether that's tiny studs or small hoops.
- Following the lobe's shape. Lobes curve. A stack often looks best following that curve rather than in a perfectly straight line.
If you wear heavy traditional earrings like jhumkas for festivals and weddings, mention it. It affects how we place the piercing, and when you'll be able to wear them.
Lobes, tradition and everyday life
In Tamil Nadu and across South India, ear piercing has deep cultural roots. Gold studs, jhumkas and heavy festival earrings are part of family celebrations, weddings and temple visits. Many of our local clients want lobes that can carry those pieces beautifully for decades. Many of our visitors, meanwhile, want a small stud and a story to tell back home. Both deserve the same attention to placement. A lobe pierced with heavy earrings in mind is placed a little more centrally, with enough tissue below the hole to support the weight over time.
First piercing? Here's what to know
- Consultations are free, and there's no pressure to go ahead
- You'll see the marked placement in a mirror and approve it first
- Needles are single-use and tools are autoclave-sterilised
- The piercing itself takes a second or two per ear
- Most people say it was easier than they expected
- You'll leave with written aftercare and a way to message us
- Eat something beforehand. A light meal helps if you're nervous
Bring a friend if you'd like company. Holding someone's hand is allowed, encouraged even.
Choosing everyday earrings in a humid climate
Once your lobes are healed, the earrings you wear every day matter more than you might think in Pondicherry's heat. Sweat and humidity make skin more reactive to cheap metals, especially those containing nickel. Lightweight studs and small hoops in good-quality metals are the comfortable everyday choice. Save heavy pieces for occasions, and take them off before sleeping. If your lobes ever feel itchy or sore after wearing a particular pair, the metal is the most likely culprit. Switch back to a trusted pair and let the skin calm down.
Re-piercing closed holes
Holes that closed years ago are common, especially if you stopped wearing earrings for a while. Re-piercing is usually straightforward. Tell us about any old piercings, scarring or past healing problems, and we'll check the tissue before choosing a placement. Sometimes it's best to pierce exactly where the old hole was. Sometimes a few millimetres away is better, if there's scar tissue.

What happens during a lobe piercing
- Free consultation: placement, number of piercings and jewellery.
- Clean and mark: you check the dots in the mirror, and we adjust until they're right.
- Set-up: autoclave-sterilised tools and fresh single-use needles, opened in front of you.
- Piercing: a quick pinch, usually milder than people expect.
- Jewellery and aftercare: studs go in, and you leave with written instructions.

Jewellery for fresh lobes
- Studs are best for healing. They move less than hoops or dangly earrings.
- Body-safe metals, such as implant-grade titanium or solid gold, are widely recommended for fresh piercings. Avoid plated or unknown metals while healing, even if they're pretty.
- Comfortable backs. Flat or secure backs reduce snagging on hair, towels and dupattas.
- Heavy earrings later. Jhumkas, chandeliers and heavy hoops should wait until the piercing is fully healed and strong. We'll advise when.
How a lobe piercing heals
| Stage | What's normal | Your job |
|---|---|---|
| Days 1–5 | Tenderness, slight swelling and warmth | Saline once or twice daily, no touching or twisting |
| Weeks 1–3 | Light crusting, occasional itch | Soften with saline, pat dry, sleep off it if possible |
| Weeks 4–8 | Looks and feels settled | Keep the studs in, avoid heavy earrings |
| After 2 months | Healed for many people | Ask us before switching to hoops or heavy pieces |
Aftercare in a humid, beachy town
- Clean once or twice a day with sterile saline wound wash, then pat dry with clean paper towel.
- Don't twist the studs. That old advice irritates the piercing more than it helps.
- Hands off. Clean hands only, and only when cleaning.
- Skip home remedies. No alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, turmeric paste or oils. Saline is all you need.
- Watch your hair, scarves and dupattas. They can snag fresh jewellery.
- Phone on speaker, or on the other ear, for the first couple of weeks.
- Helmets: slide them on and off gently over your ears.
- No swimming in the sea, pools or tubs for the first few weeks. Sea water isn't sterile, however lovely Serenity Beach looks.
- Rinse after sweating. Pondicherry humidity means sweat around the ears. A gentle saline rinse helps.
If you notice spreading redness, heat, increasing pain, discoloured discharge or fever, see a doctor promptly and let us know.
Healing while you travel
Lobe piercings are a lovely, low-fuss souvenir of a trip. Pack a small sterile saline spray and clean paper towels. On flights, avoid headphones that press on your lobes, and try not to sleep on the pierced side against the window. Hotel pillows see a lot of guests, so a clean T-shirt over the pillowcase is a simple, effective trick.
Thinking about stretching later?
Some people plan to gradually stretch their lobes in the future. If that's you, mention it at the consultation, because it can influence placement. Stretching should only ever begin once a piercing is completely healed, and it should be done slowly, in small steps, with the right jewellery. Rushing it can tear the tissue or cause thinning that's hard to reverse. We're happy to talk through what a healthy approach looks like for your lobes before you start.
Signs your lobe piercing is healing well
It's reassuring to know what "good" looks like. Healthy healing usually means tenderness fading day by day, a little clear or pale crust that softens easily with saline, and no spreading redness. After a few weeks, the jewellery sits comfortably and the skin around it looks like the rest of your ear. If instead things are getting redder, hotter or more painful over time, rather than less, that's your cue to see a doctor and let us know.
Common lobe piercing mistakes
- Changing to hoops or heavy earrings too early.
- Twisting the studs to "stop them sticking".
- Sleeping on fresh piercings every night.
- Using alcohol or home remedies instead of saline.
- Taking earrings out for long periods in the first months. Lobes can close quickly.
- Placing piercings too low for the heavy earrings you love.
