Words worth carrying, spelled right.

Lettering tattoos in Pondicherry

A name, a date, a line from a poem, a mantra in your grandmother's language. Lettering tattoos are deeply personal and deceptively tricky: too small, too tight or too fancy, and they turn unreadable. Here's how we make words that stay words.

Triple-checked with you

Lettering is the only tattoo style where a single wrong letter turns art into a lifelong conversation starter, and not the good kind. It's also one of the most meaningful styles we do. A handwritten note from a parent, coordinates from a life-changing trip, a single word that got you through a hard year. Let's make sure yours is readable, beautiful and spelled correctly.

What makes lettering readable for decades

Ink spreads very slightly under the skin over time. Text is where you notice it most. Tiny gaps inside letters like "e", "a" and "o" can fill in, and tight letter spacing can merge words. The rules below keep lettering crisp.

Size

The single biggest factor. Very small script looks charming on day one and can become a smudge later. We'll recommend a minimum letter height for your font and placement. It's usually a little bigger than people expect.

Spacing

Generous gaps between letters and words, and open counters (the holes inside letters), give the design room to age.

Font choice

Ornate scripts with hairline flourishes need more size. Clean serif or sans-serif lettering, or simple handwriting, can go smaller while staying legible.

Line weight

Slightly bolder lines hold up better than ultra-thin ones, especially on hands, fingers and feet. For the delicate look, see our fine line guide for how we balance elegance and longevity.

Lettering in other languages

Pondicherry is a place where Tamil, French, English and Sanskrit sit comfortably together on the same street signs, menus and temple walls. Unsurprisingly, multilingual lettering is a big part of what we tattoo.

  • Tamil: beautiful rounded forms. Make sure the text is checked by a fluent reader, and keep enough size for the loops and dots.
  • Hindi / Devanagari and Sanskrit: the headline bar connects letters, so spacing and size need care.
  • French: accents matter. "é" and "e" are not the same word, and accents are tiny details that need room.
  • Arabic, Japanese and others: please bring text verified by a native speaker. We'll take care of the drawing.
  • Names and dates: children, parents, partners, pets and anniversaries.
  • Handwriting: a signature or a line from an old letter, recreated from a photo.
  • Quotes and lyrics: keep them short. One strong line beats a paragraph.
  • Mantras and prayers: in Sanskrit, Tamil or your own language.
  • Coordinates: the GPS point of somewhere meaningful. The Promenade at dawn, perhaps.
  • A single word: often the most powerful choice.

Your lettering proof checklist

We check spelling with you before tattooing. Check it yourself too, and slowly.

  • Spelling checked letter by letter (read it backwards, it helps)
  • Translation verified by a fluent, trusted speaker
  • Accents, dots and special characters correct
  • Dates in the format you want (22.10.2026 vs 10.22.2026)
  • Capital and lowercase letters as you intend
  • Font size agreed for long-term legibility
  • Stencil read in the mirror and directly, since mirrors flip things

Recreating handwriting, step by step

Handwriting tattoos are some of the most emotional pieces we do: a mother's "love you", a grandfather's signature, a note tucked into a lunchbox years ago. Here's how we turn paper into skin.

  1. Find the best sample. Birthday cards, letters, recipe books and signed photos all work. Look for the clearest, most natural example of the word or phrase.
  2. Scan or photograph it flat, in good daylight, straight on, with no shadows across the ink.
  3. We clean it up gently, removing paper texture and smudges while keeping every quirk that makes it theirs.
  4. We adjust the line weight so very thin pen strokes become tattoo-safe lines that will last.
  5. We size it for your placement, sometimes enlarging it so small handwriting stays readable.
  6. Stencil and mirror check, then we tattoo with autoclave-sterilised tools and single-use needles.

If the handwriting has a few letters you need but not the exact word, bring several samples. We can sometimes combine letters from different notes, carefully, so the result still looks natural.

Common lettering mistakes

  • Too much text, too small. A whole paragraph on a wrist is a future smudge. Edit to the line that matters most.
  • Ultra-thin script at tiny sizes. Beautiful fonts need room to stay beautiful.
  • Trusting an online translator. We've all seen the internet's favourite tattoo fails. Verify with a real person.
  • Forgetting the curve. Text on a forearm or collarbone wraps around the body. We'll adjust the baseline so it reads straight from where you look.
  • Picking a font you only love today. Trendy fonts date quickly. Classic letterforms, or real handwriting, stay timeless.

How lettering ages

Lettering over time
WhenWhat happensHow to protect it
First monthLines look crisp, then flaky and slightly dullGentle washing, no picking, no swimming
Year oneSettled and sharpSunscreen whenever exposed
Five yearsThinnest strokes soften slightlyMoisturised skin, no sunburn
Ten years plusSmall counters may begin to close if lettering was too tinyGenerous size and spacing from the start

The takeaway is simple. Size and spacing decided on day one do most of the work for the next twenty years.

Placement for lettering

  1. Inner forearm: readable to you, and a classic for meaningful words.
  2. Collarbone: elegant for short phrases.
  3. Ribs or side: lovely for longer lines. More sensitive, though.
  4. Upper back or between the shoulders: great for bold statements.
  5. Wrist: popular for names and dates, kept simple.
  6. Fingers: cute, but they fade faster and often need touch-ups.

Think about who you want to read it. Text facing you, as on an inner forearm, reads to you. Text facing outward reads to everyone else.

Session and aftercare

Lettering sessions are often short, from about half an hour to a couple of hours, which makes them a popular choice for travellers and walk-ins. As always, we use autoclave-sterilised tools and single-use needles.

Healing in Pondicherry's warm, humid air:

  • Wash gently and pat dry two to three times a day.
  • Moisturise very lightly. Text shows any patchiness.
  • Don't pick the flakes. A missing chunk in a letter is very noticeable.
  • No sea, pool or bathtub swimming for two to four weeks.
  • Shade while healing, sunscreen forever after.

Flying home soon? Wear loose clothing over the tattoo, keep a travel-sized fragrance-free cleanser in your bag, and resist the temptation to show it off by peeling back the wrap every hour on the plane.

Words inspired by this town

Pondicherry has a way of getting into people's vocabulary. Visitors leave with French phrases picked up in White Town cafés, lines of Tamil poetry, or a word from a conversation in Auroville that stuck. A few lettering ideas clients have brought us, in spirit if not word for word:

  • A French word or short phrase, a nod to the French Quarter. Do check the grammar and accents with a fluent speaker.
  • A line in Tamil from a favourite poet, song or a grandparent's saying.
  • A Sanskrit mantra paired with a simple symbol.
  • The coordinates of the Promenade, a beach or a house that mattered.
  • A date that marks the trip, the decision or the person.

Whatever the words, the same rules apply: check them carefully, size them generously and give them space. We'll handle the lettering, the line weight and the flow. You bring the meaning.

01 /

How small can a lettering tattoo be?

It depends on the font and placement. Simple fonts can go smaller than ornate script. We'll recommend a minimum size so the words stay readable for years.

02 /

Can you tattoo my parent's handwriting?

Yes. Bring a clear photo or scan of the handwriting. We'll gently clean it up for tattooing while keeping its character.

03 /

Do you tattoo Tamil, Hindi or Sanskrit lettering?

Yes. Please bring text verified by a fluent speaker. We'll draw it carefully and size it so every loop and mark stays clear.

04 /

Can you translate my phrase for me?

We'd rather not be your translator. Please have a fluent speaker you trust verify the wording. We'll make sure it's drawn beautifully.

05 /

Will my script tattoo blur?

Not if it's sized and spaced properly and protected from the sun. Tiny, tightly packed script is what usually blurs.

06 /

Is a lettering tattoo a good walk-in option?

Often, yes. Short lettering is quick to set up. Have your exact, checked text ready on your phone.

07 /

What's the best placement for a name tattoo?

Inner forearms, wrists, collarbones and upper arms are popular. Think about whether you want to read it yourself or have others see it, and keep it large enough to stay clear.

08 /

Can lettering be combined with other designs?

Absolutely. Florals, lines, dates and symbols pair beautifully with lettering. We'll design it as one cohesive piece.

09 /

How long does a lettering tattoo take to heal?

The surface usually heals in two to four weeks. Avoid swimming and direct sun during that time, and don't pick at the flakes, since gaps show clearly in text.

10 /

Can you fix a misspelled tattoo?

Sometimes a letter can be reworked, and sometimes the word is better covered with a new design. Bring it in and we'll look at the options honestly.
